AREA

Growing Bay Area start-up Shiru was looking to move into a new office space that would accommodate growth and a pilot plant laboratory for studying the development of proteins for vegan food products. The design for the new headquarters featured a sprawling lab network complete with Downstream, Upstream, Analytical, and additional spaces for full process sequencing. The lab spaces snake around the south side of the space, encircling the office and pilot plan and taking advantage of the perimeter windows. Typically in lab design, benches are sequestered in long rows far from windows. We wanted to flip the paradigm, giving the scientists continuous access to daylight and the campus beyond. Introducing color to the labs, meeting rooms and bathrooms was key to distinguishing Shiru, lending its spaces lively identity that contributes to the teamwork integral to their business model. The Test Kitchen, where scientists and chefs test new proteins developed next door, shares a counter with the staff kitchen, viewable through expansive glass walls on all sides of the room. The staff kitchen provides a gathering and break area for everyone to gather. Partial height walls of the kitchen separate this space loosely from the open office, providing a relaxed place for impromptu gathering, all-hands meetings, and even weekly yoga classes. This flexible, open and cheerful workspace has given Shiru a place to grow into while also helping them attract talent and investors. The architecture demonstrates company ethos and helps Shiru showcase the best of what they offer in food innovation and technology.
